It was a beautiful night in Joliet for baseball to return. The 2020 City of Champions Cup’s opening night game was between the Tully Monsters and Slammers. Fans in attendance watched a phenomenal game that brought back the joy of the game, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Slammers came out of the gates hot being the first to put a run on the board. Lead off hitter Harrison Moore was able to reach on the throwing error by Tyler Depreta-Johnson. After a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch, Moore scored on the wild pitch giving the Slammers a 1-0 lead at the end of the 1st inning.

The Tully Monsters were able to find their groove in the top of the 3rd inning. Manny Jefferon smoked a fastball into center field scoring Caleb Ricca. The Slammers were able to escape with the score being 1-1 after Will Headen struck out the final two batters.

In the bottom of the 4th, The Slammers had bases loaded with one out. John Bloye was able to get a fielder’s choice ground ball and strikeout to get out of the jam.

In the bottom of the 5th, the Tully Monsters went to the bullpen and brought in RHP Joe Leinhund. Slammer’s Jacob Crum took advantage of a fastball down the plate and drove in a run on a single giving the Slammers a 2-1.

The Tully Monsters wouldn’t be trailing for long as the top of the 6th proved to be an explosive inning. The highlight came from Matthew Koehler who hit a moonshot 3-run home run onto the roof of the building in right field. The Tully Monsters took the 4-2 lead for the first time of the night.

The Slammers were able to scratch across a run in the bottom of the 6th making it 4-3. Zach Kirtley came in to pinch-hit and hit a solo shot solo home run from Zach Kirtley. The Tully Monsters were able to respond again with another 3 run inning. Alex McKenna drove in Manny Jefferson on a double to right-center field. Matthew Koehler hit another home run extending the lead to 7-3.

In the bottom of the 7th, the Slammers were able to cut the deficit to 7-5. Joba Ferrel came off the bench and delivered a clutch double driving in two runners.

After that, the Slammers stalled offensively and would fall to the Tully Monsters 7-5. Both teams are returning to action this weekend with games on Saturday and Sunday. Tomorrow’s game between the Chicago Deep Dish and the Nerds Herd is scheduled for 7:05.

Tonight’s Merchants and Manufacturer’s Bank Player of the Game is: Matthew Koehler 2-4, 2 HR, 5 RBI.
