
Slammers Unwrap Win on Christmas In July Against Gateway
JOLIET, IL - As game one of the Slammers v. Grizzlies series got under way, Slammers lefty Tyler Jandron took to the hill. Joliet came out swinging and were hungry for a victory. After facing 4 Grizzlies pitchers, the Slammers would go on to win game one 9-3.
The top of the first would see the Grizzlies chalk up an early run. Jose Rosario hit an RBI single driving home Andres Regnault. Gateway's 1-0 lead wouldn't last, however, as the Slammers put two runs on the board in their first turn at bat. Dylan Hardy hit a single out to right field, and after an error by the Grizzlies catcher, Scott Holzwasser crossed the plate with Hardy advancing to second. An RBI single by Braxton Davidson would drive home Dylan Hardy, giving Joliet a 2-1 lead.
In the following at bat, Brian Parreira would hit a solo homer into Power Alley in right field to extend the lead to 3-1. This would be Parreira’s sixth homer this season.
In the top of the fourth, Gateway would level the score bringing home two runs. An RBI double by Connor Owings would score Justin Jones, then another RBI double hit by Ty Moore would let Ownings score. The tally was 3-3 going into the fifth inning.
The top of the fifth inning would see Slammers righty Brett Smith take charge on the mound relieving Tyler Jandron. Jandron would face 24 batters, four being strikeouts. The bottom half of the inning would be a monumental inning for the Slammers, scoring six runs to take the lead back permanently. Brylie Ware would kick things off with an RBI single scoring Braxton Davidson, who singled to get on base and advanced to second on a wild pitch. An RBI from Lane Baremore would score Brylie Ware, sending Dave Matthews to third. Jordan Rathbone would put up a sacrifice fly to score Dave Matthews. Tyler Depreta-Johnson would send the ball to right field for an RBI single allowing Lane Baremore to cross the plate. Scott Holzwasser would get to first on an error by Gateway’s third basemen, and the error would see two Slammers, Brian Parreira and Tyler Depreta-Johnson, cross the plate, extending the lead to 9-3. Both would be recorded as unearned runs.
Slammers ace Trevor Charpie would head to the mound in the top of the ninth inning, relieving Brett Smith. Smith would see 12 batters, three being strikeouts. Smith held the Grizzlies to 0 runs while on the mound. Charpie closed out the game in style with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Tonight's 9-3 win put the Slammers record at 21-36 on the season. Join us for the next home game on Saturday, July 30th at 6:05 p.m. Saturday's game will be followed by a Concert in The Concourse with a performance by Cielito Lindo Family Mariachi Band, Saturday's game is also Harry Potter Night.
