EARLY LEAD PROVES TOO MUCH FOR SLAMMERS, FALL TO RASCALS 11-0

JOLIET, IL — The Joliet Slammers were unable to overcome a rough start from pitcher Scot Hoffman in his first game back from the IL, dropping the first of a three-game series against the River City Rascals on Tuesday night.

Following a scoreless 1st, the Rascals broke through with a big 2nd inning. After his team loaded the bases, Tanner Murphy drove in the first two runs of the game on a single. Nick Anderson followed that by reaching on an error from Slammers first baseman Dash Winningham, bringing Nolan Meadows home from third. Andrew Penner then brought Murphy home on a single of his own, with Kameron Esthay following him with another two-run single. The final run of the inning came on a ground out from Braxton Martinez, allowing Trevor Achenbach to score from third.

The Rascals scored 7 total in the second, 5 earned and 2 unearned, all credited to Hoffman, who was pulled 1/3rd of the way through the inning. The Slammers failed to respond in their half, ending the inning 7-0, Rascals.

The Rascals added two more runs in the 3rd inning. With the bases loaded once again, Anderson drove in another run on a ground out to short. Penner did the same, and with the Slammers failing to add a run of their own, the inning ended with a 9-0 Rascals lead.

Relieving Tyler Jones in the top of the 4th, pitcher Wes Albert was the bright spot for the Slammers. He pitched three innings, during which the Rascals only mustered one unearned run. The Slammers were unable to add a run to their line however, moving into the 7th with the score sitting at 10-0, Rascals.

Taking over for Albert, Mitch McIntyre pitched a fair 7th inning, allowing one more unearned run on a sacrifice fly from Achenbach. That would be the final run, as the game was called in the 8th inning due to weather conditions, with the Rascals taking the 11-0 win.

Tonight’s Merchants and Manufacturers Bank Player of the Game is Wes Albert (3.0 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 5 SOs and 0 ER).

The Slammers face-off against the Rascals again tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. at DuPage Medical Group Field.
