SLAMMERS GRIND OUT VICTORY AGAINST LAKE ERIE

Joliet, IL —The Joliet Slammers presented by ATI Physical Therapy went into the third game of the series against the Crushers looking to salvage a win, despite dropping the first two games of the series. They were able to walk away with a 5-4 victory on Thursday night.

Cody Lenahan would start the scoring for Lake Erie in the 2nd inning when he sent a ground ball into right field to score the runner at 3rd. Later in the inning, catcher Mason Brown hit another RBI single into right to add to the lead. The Slammers would punch back in the home half on an RBI single into center field by catcher Cody Clark. After 2 innings, the Crushers lead 2-1.

Effective Slammers defense was on display when pitcher Duke von Schamann made a flashy catch behind his back on a chopper to the mound in the 4th inning. The play gave the Slammers momentum and prevented potential runners from scoring.

Despite this, the Crushers rallied in the 5th when first baseman Kewby Meyer hit a 2 RBI double to center, after Slammers center fielder Travis Bolin dove to make the play but couldn’t make the catch. Lake Erie lead 4-1.

Pitching struggles by the Crushers lead to Joliet success in the home half of the 5th. After L.J. Kalawaia was walked in with bases loaded, R.J Thompson hit an RBI single into right narrowing the gap. Later, a sacrifice fly to left by Ridge Hoopii-Haslam scored a runner to tie the game at 4.

No runs were produced until the bottom of the 8th, when Slammers’s third baseman Danny Zardon hit an RBI single into left field, breaking the tie and sealing the win for Joliet 5-4.

Tonight’s Merchants and Manufacturers Player of the Game is Danny Zardon for his game winning RBI in the 8th inning (1-4, 1 RBI).

The Slammers take to the road to play against the Washington Wild Things on Friday.
