Joliet, IL —The Joliet Slammers Presented by ATI Physical Therapy had their hands full against Kramer Champlin of the Beach Bums as Duke Von Schamann started for Joliet. The wind was gusting straight out as the weather seemed to indicate that an offense-filled game would be on our hands.

Both pitchers matched one another posting scoreless innings one after the other. Each team had chances with runners in scoring position with 2 outs but both teams were unable to manufacture any runs.

Melvin Rodriguez made the defensive play of the game with two Beach Bums in scoring position and 2 down when Orlando Rivera ripped a ground ball up the middle to possibly plate the first runs of the game. Rodriguez laid out head first to snag it and end the inning still tied at zero.

Duke and Champlin entered the 9th inning with 8 scoreless frames. For Von Schamann this was his longest start of the year; his longest before today was 8 innings. The Bums went down quietly in the 9th inning which set the table for an exciting 9th inning for Joliet.

Rodriguez led off with a single to center and Haslam worked the walk to put 2 on with no outs. Champlin laboring got a fielder's choice and a strikeout to put the game in the hands of Danny Zardon who is no stranger to walk off hits.

With Haslam at second base, Zardon ripped a base hit to center field as Arby Fields gathered and fired home, but his throw missed high as Haslam crossed the plate and the Slammers mobbed Zardon in left center field as the fans exploded.

Joliet edged out Traverse City and took the series with the 1-0 victory. Duke Von Schamann was the winning pitcher as Champlin received the loss.

Duke Von Schamann is the player of the game with 7 strikeouts over 9 shutout frames.

The Slammers return home September 1-3 with their final series of the season against the Lake Erie Crushers. Tickets can be purchased at 815-722-2287 or by visiting
