SLAMMERS FOLLOW UP 2018 CHAMPIONSHIP WITH SEASON-OPENING WIN

JOLIET, IL — Lead by three returnees from 2018’s Frontier League Championship team, the Joliet Slammers opened the 2019 season with a win over the Windy City Thunderbolts.

Catcher Cody Clark, MVP of the 2018 Championship series, kicked off the scoring for the Slammers in the bottom of the 5th with a solo home run to left field. The Thunderbolts would not allow a baserunner for the rest of the inning, and the Slammers took a 1-0 lead into the 6th.

Designated Hitter Brian Parriera followed up Clark’s solo shot with one of his own in the bottom of the 7th to put the Slammers up 2-0.

After pitching seven scoreless innings, Slammers starter Scot Hoffman would be relieved by Isaac Sanchez to start the 8th inning. Windy City would respond to the change with their first run of the game on an RBI double from Tyler Straub. The Thunderbolts left a runner on 3rd to end the half of the inning, with the Slammers holding on to a 2-1 lead.

Relieving Isaac Sanchez in the top of the 9th, Ryan Koziol shut down Windy City’s attempts to rally, sealing the Slammers an opening night victory.

Tonight’s Merchants and Manufacturer’s Bank Player of the Game is Scot Hoffman (7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, and 5 SO).

The Slammers are on the road next, starting a three game series at the Florence Freedom tomorrow.
