JOLIET, IL — The night game of the first doubleheader of the City of Champions Cup saw the Joliet Tully Monsters and Chicago Deep Dish face off in a battle of the unbeatens. The Tully Monster beat the Slammers on Thursday night 7-5 thanks to Matthew Koehler’s two homerun performance. The Deep Dish are coming off an 8-7 win over the Nerds Herd last night with 11 hits and four extra-base hits.
Compared to previous nights of double-digit hit columns and high scoring games, the start of the game proved to be a pitching duel.
The storyline of the game was Deitrich Enns’s steller performance. He started the game by striking out the side, and did it again in the 3rd inning. He exited the game after the 4th inning with 10 strikeouts against 14 batters, 0 runs, and 2 hits. Other bullpen arms for the Tully Monsters who contributed were Robert Milacki (3 IP, 0 hits, 0 runs, 3 strikeouts) and Danny Zardon (2 IP, 0 hits, 2 strikeouts).
The first run of the game came in the top of the 2nd inning. Christian Funk of the Tully Monsters hit a ground ball to the right side, which scored Alex McKenna from third. The Tully Monsters would grab the early 1-0 lead. In the bottom half, Jack Strunc of the Deep Dish hit a double, but Dietrich Enns retired the next three batters to end the inning.
The next run came in the 6th inning after a Deep Dish pitching change. Philip Caulfield smacked the first pitch he saw from Robert Peace over the right field fence to grow the Tully Monster’s lead to 2-0. Caleb Ricca singled right after, but Peace retired the following three batters.
The hits kept on coming for the Tully Monsters as they had two in the 7th inning. Alex McKenna led off the inning with a single, reached second on a passed ball, and stole 3rd base. With two outs, Michael Deeb sent the ball to the opposite field warning track for a double. The Tully Monsters extended their lead to 3-0.
Again in the top of the 9th, the Tully Monsters added another run on a single from Deeb for his 2nd RBI of the night. The Deep Dish struggled at the plate tonight and couldn’t find a way to scratch a run across. As a team, they had 16 combined strikeouts.
The Tully Monsters improve to 2-0 and take on the NERDS Herd (0-2) tomorrow at 12:05pm. The Deep Dish suffer their first loss (1-1) and play the Slammers (1-1) in the evening game at 5:05.
Tonight’s Merchants and Manufacturer’s Bank Player of the Game is: Dietrich Enns 4.0 IP, 2 hits, 0 runs, 10 strikeouts.
